Smoothie or milkshake?
Nowadays, we encounter the term “smoothie” in more and more places. Gastronomic and diet magazines are full of smoothie recipes, each better than the last, and we can even find ready-made smoothies on supermarket shelves that look just like milkshakes.

So is smoothie just a trendier name for milkshake? No. Let’s see what the difference between the two is!
Milkshake
A milkshake is usually made with fruit and milk, blended together in a blender. For example, a banana milkshake or a strawberry milkshake.
Milkshake recipes
- banana milkshake
Slice 2 ripe bananas and blend them with 4 dl cold milk and a little sweetener. Pour into tall glasses and sprinkle ground cinnamon on top. (2 servings)
- strawberry milkshake
You can also make a strawberry smoothie, to which I always add a few fresh basil leaves. This makes for a truly special and refreshing drink.
- green milkshake with strawberries, spinach, and lime
Defrost 2 handfuls of frozen strawberries or use fresh ones. Put them in a blender. Slice 1 ripe banana and blend it with 200 ml of cold water, 2 handfuls of spinach, the juice of ½ a lime and 1 tablespoon of quadruple-strength sweetener. (1 serving)

Smoothie
Smoothies were originally made only from fruit and/or vegetables, which were frozen before use, or fresh fruit/vegetables were pureed with ice cubes.
Smoothie recipes
Forest fruit smoothie
Puree the frozen fruit and/or vegetables with a little water or fruit juice using a hand blender or food processor.
Coconut goes very well with forest fruits. I used coconut cream for this smoothie, so it is also lactose-free. A truly refreshing summer drink!

Which one does not contain dairy products?
So, milkshake always contain dairy products and have a thinner consistency than puree-like smoothies, which contain no dairy products, only frozen fruits and/or vegetables. The truth is, however, that these so-called rules have become blurred; dairy products (such as Greek yogurt) or plant-based milks are increasingly found among the ingredients of smoothies.
I don’t like using any of the trendy drink names, so I called this delicacy a yogurt drink:

What do smoothie trends reveal?
Based on current trends, smoothies are expected to continue growing in popularity, but they are already trendy because they fit perfectly with other nutritional trends and gastronomic fashions.
Lactose-free and vegan trend
Smoothies do not usually contain dairy products, so they are suitable for lactose-intolerant people and vegans.
Diet drinks trend
A big favorite among dieters, although this is more true for vegetable-based and sugar-free varieties.
Healthy eating trend
A super healthy, fiber-rich drink that replenishes our vitamin reserves, which can be further enhanced with superfoods.
Smoothie bowl
While we’re on the subject of superfoods, we should also mention the improved version of the smoothie: the smoothie bowl. Put simply, this means that you eat (rather than drink) your smoothie from a bowl instead of a glass. The main reason for this is that you add a bunch of crunchy goodies (such as oatmeal, granola, seeds) and superfoods (such as chia seeds, acai berries, goji berries, maca powder) to the fruit puree.
Why drink milkshakes and smoothies?
- Fruit or vegetable shakes and smoothies are a quick and easy way to get vitamins and minerals into your body.

- Two in one, because you not only get your vitamins, but also your daily fluid intake by drinking a shake or smoothie, so they are especially recommended for those who always say they can’t drink much.
- If you can’t stand spinach but want to reap its benefits, blend it with a little banana and you’ll be able to drink it without even noticing the spinach is in there.
- It’s easy to make, so you can whip up a healthy snack or afternoon treat in no time, which you can even take with you in a jar.
When should you drink milkshakes and smoothies?
Blending turns fruit into rapidly absorbed carbohydrates, so even though many people think of them as a breakfast drink, as a nutritionist I do not recommend them for breakfast, because at this time of day it is better to fill our bodies with slow-absorbing carbohydrates (oatmeal, whole grain baked goods). However, they are highly recommended as a second meal, i.e. for a mid-morning snack, as well as for an afternoon snack. They can also be consumed before and after exercise. Before training, to get energy quickly and be able to train better, and after training, to replenish the carbohydrates needed by your muscles, which you may lose during training. If you want to build muscle, these drinks are definitely recommended after training. Preferably boosted with protein powder.
How can it be incorporated into your diet?

Both milkshakes and smoothies can be diet-friendly, depending on the ingredients you use. Here are some tips to help you lose weight:
- Don’t use sugar or honey to sweeten things! Choose zero-calorie sweeteners such as erythritol or stevia if you really need to add flavor. Some fruits don’t need anything added because they are naturally sweet.
- Use low-fat dairy products or avoid them altogether. Water contains no calories. It is a good idea to drink water instead of milk or yogurt.
- Choose low-calorie, fat-burning fruits (e.g., kiwi, berries, citrus fruits) instead of fattening ones (e.g., bananas, melons, mangoes).
To lose weight, increase the protein content of your smoothies and shakes by adding protein powder. Try the protein banana shake recipe, which you can find in the book Fitness Sweets.
Summary
From a dietary perspective, there is no difference between smoothies and milkshakes. Both can be prepared in a diet-friendly or fattening way. If you want to lose weight, the most important thing is to pay attention to the ingredients and avoid added sugars. Don’t sip on sugary drinks! Whether it’s a milkshake or a smoothie, the key is the ingredients (fresh vegetables and fruit without sugar) and when you consume it (mid-morning snack, afternoon snack, before and after exercise). Both drinks are great for adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet. They contribute to a healthy lifestyle if you pay attention to the above. Try one of the recipes and create your own!
