Savory granola: Hungarian-inspired recipe with paprika

Seed mix for salads or cream soups
homemade salty granola

Salty granola is perfect for snacking on its own, sprinkled on salads, or even on cream soups. Spice up your meals with this mix! I’ve made countless granola recipes using the sweet version. Savory granola, however, was uncharted territory for me. Yet it is extremely versatile and easy to customize, depending on the flavor profile you want to achieve. Here, I’m sharing a Hungarian-inspired recipe with paprika.

What is granola?

According to the dictionary, granola is: “A breakfast cereal made from natural ingredients, a US brand name.” In my opinion, this definition does not reveal much about granola. I would rather say that granola is nothing more than baked cereal enriched with extras that make it a super healthy breakfast or snack. You can read more about it here: >>> Is Granola Healthy?

It will keep for months in a sealable jar. Make a large batch and just take it out when you want to sprinkle it on something delicious.

Ingredients

In just a few minutes, you can make your own salted seed mix at home, tailored entirely to your own taste. The key is to use:

  • large-grain oat flakes
  • olive oil
  • oilseeds (e.g., walnuts, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, cashews, or even pistachios)
  • salt
  • other spices (e.g., paprika, dried wild garlic, garlic salt, oregano)

This is a variation made with cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, and walnuts. I added dried chives and a little ginger to the spices.
