At this age, metabolism slows down, muscle mass decreases, while the risk of osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes increases. For this reason, healthy eating plays a particularly important role. In this article, based on Mireille Guiliano’s book: French Women Don’t Get Fat The Secrets of Eating for Pleasure, I summarize the characteristics of this stage of life and then offer suggestions for a healthy lifestyle from the perspective of a food blogger and nutrition consultant.

The best part of this stage of life: more time, calmness, peace

The period beginning after the age of 55 can be liberating for many women: more free time, less pressure to conform, opportunities to try new things. Because of your experience, you no longer engage in games. You are wise and know what you want. You are more patient, you are no longer in a hurry, and perhaps because of this, you are able to enjoy the small pleasures of life more deeply, such as a summer sunset or the soothing sight of a starry sky. If you have done your job well so far, you can now live in a kind of spiritual peace, because you have achieved everything you wanted.

  • Few new social relationships, lack of friends.

  • Protein intake: muscle mass decreases with age, so it is very important to consume regular sources of protein (fish, poultry, eggs, legumes, dairy products).
  • Smaller portions, more frequently: easier to digest and keeps energy levels stable. Be prepared for portions to decrease steadily, as an aging body feels full sooner.
  • Varied recipes: It is normal to get tired of certain foods quickly, as your taste buds are no longer as sensitive. There is no point in cooking large portions and eating them for days on end. The principle of eating smaller portions more often applies here too.
  • Calcium and vitamin D: for maintaining healthy bones.
  • A diet rich in fiber: vegetables, fruits, whole grains to regulate digestion and cholesterol levels. Eat foods that speed up your metabolism.

  • Enjoying food: At this age, many people rediscover the joy of cooking, and shared meals also play an important role.
  • Maintaining an active social life protects against loneliness and depression.
  • It is important to maintain a positive outlook on life and a sense of purpose.
  • Just as variety is important in your diet, it is also worth introducing variety into other areas of your life. I am thinking here of finding active pursuits and immersing yourself in a variety of them. Seek out company and have a diverse circle of friends. Passive relaxation and active relaxation are also forms of variety. If you spend half a day at home and another half a day away from home, that is also variety. Routines are good too (maybe you want to host your family for lunch every Sunday), but variety is truly delightful – sometimes you can go to a new place for Sunday lunch.
