If someone had told me twenty years ago that one day I would be weighing the almond milk for my morning latte on a kitchen scale and calmly entering its calories into an app, well… let’s just say I would have given them a very strange look. Over the years, I’ve tested MyFitnessPal, and Yazio. Although weighing and measuring felt inconvenient at first, I eventually learned that calorie counting doesn’t have to be stressful. These calorie calculators don’t just track the calories you consume – they also show how much protein, carbohydrate, and fat you’ve eaten. (Spoiler: cheese is not “protein” – it’s a little fat bomb disguised in protein clothing to look diet-friendly. IT’S NOT!)

Calorie Calculator: Helpful or Stressful?
Let me tell you what helped me. When I first started counting calories, I realized that the key isn’t accuracy – it’s awareness. For example, I never used to think that my afternoon espresso with 5 g of sugar and a splash of milk already adds up to 30-40 calories. Over the course of a day, these “small things” can total up to 300 calories – exactly enough to prevent a calorie deficit.
And deficit is the keyword. To lose weight, you need to consume fewer calories than you burn. There’s no arguing with this – it’s not a “belief,” it’s biology.

- Rice – Here’s the trick: raw rice has about 350 kcal per 100 g, but cooked it’s only around 120-130 kcal per 100 g. Important: always log what you actually measured. So if you measured dry rice, enter that.
- Egg – About 70-80 kcal each (if boiled rather than fried in oil, it’s even friendlier).
- Banana – 1 medium banana is around 100-120 kcal (and no, it doesn’t have “too much sugar,” it’s just fruit sugar, which is perfectly fine as long as you don’t eat three at once).
- Apple – Around 50-80 kcal (and seriously, why don’t we crave this as much as a banana?).
Calorie chart vs. calorie calculator
Calorie charts are a great starting point in the beginning. They help you see how many calories are in each food – and this often brings real surprises. Many people are shocked to realize that just because something is healthy doesn’t necessarily mean it’s diet-friendly. A handful of nuts or an avocado, for example, is very nutritious but can also be surprisingly high in calories.
No matter how healthy it is, 100 grams of avocado contains 160-180 kcal – roughly equivalent to the calories in 30 grams of Milka Oreo chocolate. But as you progress, a calorie calculator becomes much more practical. It saves what you eat, treats your favorites as recipes, calculates macros, and you don’t have to mentally juggle every bite.
This Is Why It’s Worth Doing
I think one of the biggest benefits of logging your food is that it helps you eat much more consciously. As you write down what you’ve eaten, you gradually realize how many unnecessary snacks you used to consume without even noticing. This makes it easier to reduce your calorie intake – not out of restriction, but out of awareness.

Earlier, I knew nothing about calories. I was constantly dieting but not losing any weight – in fact, the pounds kept creeping up. - Don’t focus on a single day, look at the week. If you overeat on Sunday but are in a deficit overall, it’s fine.
- Don’t subtract exercise from your daily calorie allowance – consider it a bonus deficit.
- Log absolutely everything – even a few almonds count!
- For restaurant meals, log something similar – the best estimate is better than nothing.
- Avoid regular “cheat days.” Mistakes happen naturally, don’t plan for them.
- Cook at home and use your own recipes! This way, you can adjust ingredients anytime – for example, if you see there’s too much fat, simply reduce the oil or swap sour cream for yogurt. This flexibility is a huge help if you’re watching macros and don’t want to exceed your daily allowance.
Measuring sauces
Don’t forget about sauces! Ketchup, mayonnaise, dressings – these also contain calories, and it’s easy for them to add up if you’re not careful.
A simple but very useful trick: place the sauce tube on your kitchen scale, zero it out (tare), then squeeze out the amount you want to use. After that, put the tube back on the scale, and the difference shows how many grams you used.
This is much more accurate than trying to estimate on the plate – and faster too!
