The origin of the tortilla
Originally, it was a staple food of the Aztec civilization, in the form of a thick corn cake, which the Spanish conquerors christened “tortilla.” Today, it is known and loved in many parts of the world.
It is most common in Mexico, the US, and Central America, where it is used in many different ways (e.g., tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos, fajitas, tortilla rolls).

Tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos, fajitas, and tortilla wraps – what’s the difference?
- Taco:
- Shape: A small, soft or crispy tortilla folded in half.
- Filling: Meat (e.g., beef, chicken), vegetables (e.g., tomatoes, onions), cheese, sauces.
- Serving: Individually, often eaten by hand.
- Burrito:
- Shape: A large, soft tortilla that is filled and rolled up.
- Filling: Meat, rice, beans, cheese, vegetables, sauces, sour cream, etc. Often contains a variety of ingredients.
- Serving: Completely rolled up and can be eaten by hand or from a plate.
- Quesadilla:
- Shape: Between two tortillas or a folded tortilla, which is filled and fried.
- Filling: Primarily cheese, but meat, vegetables, or other ingredients may also be added.
- Serving: Warm, with melted cheese, usually cut into slices.
- Nachos:
- Form: Tortilla chip-based dish that can be dipped in various ingredients (meat, beans, cheese, guacamole, sour cream, salsa).
- Serving: In a bowl or on a large platter, often shared.
- Fajita:
- Form: The basis of fajitas is grilled meat (often chicken or beef) and vegetables (e.g., peppers, onions), which are served in separate bowls.
- Filling: Tortillas are served alongside the meat and vegetables, which guests can use to wrap the ingredients themselves.
- Serving: The filling is served separately, alongside the tortillas.
- Tortilla wraps:
- Shape: This is the most common name for foods made from soft tortillas rolled up in various ways. It can be similar to a burrito, but the filling varies.
- Filling: It can contain meat, cheese, vegetables, salad, various sauces, and can be served cold or hot.
- Serving: Rolled up like a burrito or wrap.
In summary, the differences are mainly in how they are prepared, the fillings, and the size and texture of the tortillas.
The benefits of tortilla recipes
Tortilla dishes are also a good choice because
- They are quick to prepare,
- I can skillfully use leftovers from the refrigerator
- and make varied, healthy recipes for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
- They are also a great choice for family gatherings and barbecues, as they can be easily varied so that everyone can find their favorite.
For family gatherings and barbecues
We planned to have a barbecue with the family one afternoon in May. Since I don’t like bacon, and it doesn’t fit into my fitness lifestyle, I suggested grilling meat, cutting up salad ingredients, and I also have two delicious sauce recipes. I would use these to make delicious tortilla wraps for them. (I didn’t mention that it would be a weight-loss meal, because I knew that would put them off). The family happily agreed to the idea. (Especially since I took on the hard work myself, leaving them with only the enjoyable part of the project: eating.) I made the sauces (recipe below) and chopped the salad, then grilled the marinated chicken breasts and tortillas on a contact grill. I chopped up the cooked chicken. I asked everyone what kind of sauce they wanted. Then I spread the selected sauce on the tortillas and filled them with meat and vegetables.
At the end, I poured another helping of sauce over it, rolled it up, and handed it to my family member while it was still fresh and warm.
All this seems long when written down, but the whole operation took only a few minutes. At the end, everyone leaned back, full and satisfied, saying, “Let’s do this again next time.”
How to make your own diet tortilla wraps?
You can fill tortilla wraps with any delicacy, but if you are on a diet, stick to these:
- Protein sources: Lean meats such as grilled chicken breast or tuna, but feta cheese, mozzarella cheese, and eggs are also excellent choices. However, avoid crispy fried bacon.
- Vegetables: Add as many crunchy vegetables as possible, such as lettuce, cucumber, tomato, arugula, or carrots. Not only are they low in calories, but they are also filling and rich in vitamins. They make you feel full and are healthy too.
- Sauces: Instead of traditional mayonnaise, choose light, yogurt-based dressings. They are tasty and contain fewer calories.
Tortilla wraps: store-bought or homemade?
Of course, the easiest option is to buy tortilla wraps in the store, but if you make them at home, you have more control over the ingredients. You can choose between whole wheat flour or corn flour wraps. If you want to make them even healthier, try making homemade tortilla wraps with minimal ingredients!
A store-bought tortilla has about 180-200 calories, which is way less than a typical serving of rice (350 calories).
How to bake tortilla sheets?
Fry both sides of the tortilla in a pan without oil until it turns slightly brown. It takes a few seconds per side. Be careful not to overcook it, otherwise it will dry out and be difficult to roll up.
Spread the sauce on while it’s still warm and roll up some diet treats!
Diet sauces to spice up your tortilla wraps
Delicious sauces are a must for the perfect tortilla wrap, but instead of mayonnaise and other oily sauces, try these lighter alternatives:
- Lime yogurt sauce: Mix a tub of plain yogurt with the juice of one lime, then season with salt and pepper.
- Hungarian sauce: Mix a teaspoon of Erős Pista (like chili) into a tub of plain yogurt, then add salt.
- Italian sauce: Add a little basil and oregano to plain yogurt, then season with salt and pepper.
- Cheese sauce: You can find this in the vegan lasagna recipe, because I made one for that too.
- Bolognese sauce: Click here for the recipe.
- Avocado cream: Recipe here.
How do you roll up a tortilla?
1. Wrap
Place the filling in the center of the tortilla, then fold up the bottom part of the sheet about 2 cm. Then fold in the two sides and roll it up. Then hold it in your hand, or secure it with a toothpick or aluminum foil until you are ready to eat it. Be careful not to overfill the tortilla roll, or you will not be able to fold it.
2. Burrito
A burrito is when you completely wrap the filling in a tortilla. It’s like when you make stuffed cabbage. Place the filling at the bottom of the tortilla, fold in the two sides and roll it up from the bottom.
If you roll it up, cut it in half and eat it that way! Be careful not to overfill your burrito either!
What else can you make with tortilla wraps?
You can make more than just rolls with tortilla sheets; there are lots of other variations too. For example:
- Tortilla roll with spicy chicken ragout
- Ham and cheese tortilla pizza
- Chicken and broccoli quesadilla
