Hungarian Cottage Cheese Spread (Körözött)

Quick and delicious breakfast or dinner in a diet-friendly way
Hungarian Cottage Cheese Spread (Körözött)

What’s great about Hungarian Cottage Cheese Spread (Körözött) recipes is that they can be put together in no time and easily adjusted to your own taste. For example, I don’t like caraway seeds, so I leave them out. However, I love eating it with egg whites. I chop the cooked egg whites into small cubes and mix them in. This adds extra protein and turns it into an excellent fitness breakfast or dinner. Cottage cheese is already high in protein, so basically whatever you add, you still get a diet-friendly, healthy, and tasty sandwich spread.

Tip

If you’re feeling bold, you can even skip bread and use cabbage leaves instead. >>> Hungarian Cottage Cheese Spread (Körözött) in Cabbage Leaves

How to eat it?

Spread it on your breakfast or dinner sandwich. You can also add ham or cheese on top. Eat it with a side of vegetables, such as cucumber or pepper.

If you want a low-carb version, I have two tips:

  1. Put the Hungarian Cottage Cheese Spread (Körözött)into a halved bell pepper and you get a “pepper boat.”
  2. Boil hard eggs, remove the yolks (you can even mix them into the Cottage Cheese Spread). Fill the egg whites with the mixture and garnish with parsley.

Ingredients

  • 250 g low-fat curd cheese (cottage cheese)
  • 80 g sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon sweet red paprika powder (Hungarian)
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 pinch ground black pepper
  • caraway seeds, to taste
  • ½ red onion (about 50 g) or 2 spring onions

Instructions

  • Finely chop the red onion. Salt it lightly and mix it with the salt. Let it sit for 5 minutes. (If using spring onion, salting is not necessary.)
  • Place the cottage cheese in a mixing bowl. Add the sour cream and spices. Mix thoroughly. Finally, stir in the prepared onion.
  • If you want to add egg whites, boil 2 eggs until hard. Remove the yolks. Cut the egg whites into small cubes and mix them into the cottage cheese mixture.
  • It tastes even better if you let it rest in the fridge for 1-2 hours.
