Frankfurter Soup Recipe

A delicious Frankfurter soup recipe is a real treasure during cold weather! Savoy cabbage is both filling and budget-friendly. Traditional Hungarian soups do not always fall into the “diet-friendly” category, but with a few simple tricks, they can easily be made lighter. All you need to do is replace vegetable oil or lard with olive oil or coconut oil, and swap white flour for healthier alternatives. I completely omitted flour from this recipe, but if you prefer a thicker soup, mix 1.5 tablespoons of oat flour into the sour cream. In my opinion, it tastes absolutely amazing even without flour! It is also very easy to prepare. Give it a try!

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • ½ savoy cabbage
  • 1 Hungarian wax pepper
  • 4 small potatoes
  • 400 g smoked, pre-cooked Vienna sausages (with at least 85% meat content)
  • 450 g sour cream (12% fat)
  • salt
  • ground black pepper
  • ground cumin seeds
  • 2.5 liters water

Instructions

  • Finely chop the onion. Slice the garlic. Dice the pepper and potatoes. Cut the cabbage into thin strips. Slice the sausages into rounds and set aside.
  • Heat the olive oil in a large pot and sauté the onion until golden brown. Add the pepper and cook for a few more minutes. Finally, add the garlic, stir well, then remove the pot from the heat and sprinkle in the paprika powder. Mix thoroughly. Add the ground caraway seeds as well, then pour in the water. Season with salt and black pepper. Bring to a boil.
  • Once boiling, add the diced potatoes and shredded cabbage. Add a little more salt if needed.
  • Cook until the vegetables are tender.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the sour cream with 3–4 ladles of the hot soup broth and stir until smooth. Pour the mixture back into the soup and bring it to a gentle boil again.
  • Finally, add the sliced sausages. They only need a few minutes in the hot soup to heat through and become tender.
  • Serve with a generous spoonful of sour cream on top!
